Even if Golden Connect isn't the right fit, we want you equipped to choose well. Here are the questions every family should ask before hiring an in-home care agency.

Employment structure

  • Are caregivers W-2 employees or 1099 contractors? W-2 means the agency carries workers' comp insurance and handles taxes. 1099 means the caregiver is technically self-employed — and any injury becomes your liability if you're considered the employer of record.
  • Are caregivers bonded and insured? This protects you against theft or property damage.

Supervision

  • What's the supervision structure? Who supervises the caregiver? How often do they visit the home? Is there RN oversight?
  • How are care plans created and reviewed? A care plan should be a living document — not a one-time form.

Hiring & training

  • How are background checks handled? California requires LiveScan. Ask to see documentation.
  • What training do caregivers receive — initially and ongoing? Dementia care, mobility, fall prevention, and HIPAA basics should all be covered.
  • What's the staff turnover in the last year? Industry average is high (often 60%+). Lower is much better for continuity.

Continuity

  • How are caregivers matched to clients? Skills alone aren't enough — personality and pace of life matter.
  • What happens if my caregiver is sick or on vacation? Will the same backup person come every time, or a stranger?
  • Can I meet the caregiver before they start? The answer should be yes.

Communication

  • How will I get updates? Daily notes? Weekly summaries? Phone calls when something changes?
  • Who do I call if there's a problem at 9pm on a Saturday? Make sure there's a real answer.

Money

  • What's the hourly rate, and what does it include? Mileage? Holiday surcharges? Cancellation fees?
  • Do you work with long-term care insurance? A good agency will help you verify coverage and submit claims.
  • Is there a contract or minimum commitment? Beware long lock-ins.
If an agency can't answer these clearly and patiently, that's information.
